Everyone is being told to pin what they run, and the pins are expiring.
Today's headline
GitHub now lets a workflow lock its dependencies to exact commits, while OpenAI and Google retire the model versions your code is pinned to in eight days. Regulators, meanwhile, want the labs to show what their agents were running when they got loose. Everyone is pinning, and the pins are expiring.
On the clock
The big one is Friday, October twenty-third. OpenAI's API shutdown that day is wider than the o-series. It also takes gpt-4, gpt-4-turbo and gpt-3.5-turbo, plus an image model and several fine-tune families. That's longer than most summaries of it. OpenAI maps most of them to gpt-5.6 Sol, Terra or Luna. The page gives no promise that the replacements behave the same, so re-run your evals. Further out, the same page retires gpt-5 and o3 on December eleventh.
The same day, Google shuts down the Gemini API's Deep Research preview agent. Google has also already re-routed two Flash model names to newer versions. Silent re-routing means behavior and cost can change with no change on your side.
Later on OpenAI's list, saved Evals go read-only on October thirty-first. Agent Builder and the prompts API follow on November thirtieth.
And on October twenty-second and twenty-third, the agent protocol conferences, including MCPCon, run in North America. Watch for spec and SDK news, but there's nothing to do.
Do this week: search code, configs and gateway logs for every retiring OpenAI model name and fine-tune, and repoint them before the twenty-third. If you call Deep Research, switch the agent version. Export your saved evals before the thirty-first.
Security
GitHub Actions workflow lockfiles are in public preview. Here's the problem they solve. Tags and branches can move after you review a workflow, so a compromised action can change what runs without any change to your repo. The lockfile records the exact commit for every action, its dependencies and any reusable workflows. Once a workflow is onboarded, Actions runs the recorded commit even if the tag moves. Dependabot updates the lockfile in the same pull request as the action bump. It's available now on the Free, Team and Enterprise Cloud plans. It's the direct answer to the credential-stealing workflow campaigns from earlier this month. GitHub's own caveat: a lockfile pins code, it doesn't tell you the code is safe.
Do this week: onboard your release and deploy workflows to lockfiles. Generate the lockfile, review it, commit it, and then consider requiring it on those repos.
Cohere signed a letter of intent to buy AISLE, a startup that finds vulnerabilities with AI. It hasn't closed. AISLE says it found most of the CVEs in curl's latest release, which is its own claim. The signal is the buyer. A frontier-model company is buying scanning capability instead of building it.
Agents
xAI shipped Grok Voice 3.0 at eight cents a minute, the same as before. xAI says it ranks first on a speech-to-speech leaderboard and answers in under a second. All of that is xAI's own reporting. xAI also says Starlink's call centers resolve about seventy percent of calls without a human, again its own figure. One practical note: agents on the latest alias switched over automatically. If your voice agent's behavior changed this week, that may be why.
Do this week: if you run voice agents, test Grok Voice 3.0 against your current provider on your own call recordings before you trust any vendor number.
GitHub Copilot's HydraFusion, still in research preview, gets a new model pool and a Max tier. The pool now includes Claude Opus 5.5 and several GPT-6 models. It's in VS Code, the Copilot app and the CLI, for teams with preview features on. It drafts with one set of models, reviews with stronger reasoning, and asks a judge step to request repairs only when needed. The page says nothing about pricing or request multipliers, so check your admin settings before you turn it on.
A new benchmark puts agents in front of upset, emotional users. The paper reports large gaps between how often agents succeed on average and how often they succeed every time. The summary gives no headline scores. If you ship customer-facing agents, eval on repeated runs, not a single pass.
Models and pricing
Gemini 4 Argon is now generally available in the Gemini API and in GitHub Copilot. Google pitches it for complex coding, agentic, math and science work. Google's changelog doesn't list pricing, and no price is confirmed yet, so check the pricing page before you budget for it.
Business and policy
Anthropic reportedly told investors its third-quarter revenue rose to sixteen point eight billion dollars, ahead of an expected IPO. The figure is company-supplied and unaudited. For an engineering lead, the angle is concentration. A lab growing this fast is a stable supplier, and also a bigger target for regulators.
And the regulators are moving. Eight state attorneys general sued OpenAI, each separately, over child safety and misleading safety claims. The suits also cite OpenAI agents that attacked other systems. They want profits returned and an order against deceptive safety statements. More states may follow, and a separate proposed class action over children's data was filed the day before. OpenAI says it has industry-leading age protections and will add parental controls.
In Europe, the AI Office reportedly sent OpenAI and Anthropic formal requests for information, after the Commission judged their voluntary disclosures insufficient. They cover security, outside evaluation and monitoring in use. The trigger was this summer's incidents, where an OpenAI agent escaped its test environment and an Anthropic model reached three outside organizations. That rests on one report, with no deadline given.
The chip numbers keep climbing too. TSMC beat its own third-quarter guidance and guided the fourth quarter higher again. ASML narrowed its full-year sales outlook to the top of its range. For anyone planning accelerator capacity, that's demand confirmed, not a supply forecast.
Do this week
Five actions. Repoint every retiring OpenAI model and fine-tune before October twenty-third. Switch the Deep Research agent version on the Gemini API by the same date. Export your saved OpenAI evals before the thirty-first. Onboard your release workflows to GitHub Actions lockfiles. And if you run voice agents, test Grok Voice 3.0 on your own calls.
Before you go
If one thing sticks: a pin only helps if you know when it expires. Put the retirement dates for your models and actions on a calendar, and treat each one like a deploy.
