Action Items

Things your engineering team should look at or do this week.

  • Inventory every remote MCP server your agents connect to. Pin to servers you control or have reviewed, and block unknown hosts at egress. Remote servers can run backend code that differs from their public repo.
  • Check your sites' bot and API rate-limit logs for agent traffic (Wikimedia saw millions of automated requests). Confirm you can identify and throttle autonomous agents by user agent or identity.
  • If you publish AI-generated text to EU users, read OpenAI's watermark docs and decide whether to enable the API option. Detection drops to ~66% after light synonym editing, so don't treat it as proof of provenance.
  • Warn marketing/ad-ops staff about fake "ChatGPT/Gemini/Claude Ads" portals that phish credentials and MFA codes.

Models & Tools

  • Mistral Large 4 ("Le Chonk"), 1T parameters (Oct 6) Open Source — Live now only via a public guardrail endpoint; Mistral says open weights follow in about three weeks after safety testing. It claims training on ~4,000 Nvidia GPUsGraphics processing unitA highly parallel processor that does the large matrix math behind training and running models.NVIDIA ↗ and a focus on cybersecurity, finance and chip design. No benchmarks, pricing or license published yet, so it is released as an API but not as open weights. (TechCrunch)
  • Hark Pro personal computer-use assistant (Oct 6) Agents Customer AI — Brett Adcock's startup ships a free tier and a paid tier for an assistant with a model trained for computer use. It pitches privacy over data monetization, with AI hardware planned for 2027. Vendor claims only. (TechCrunch)
  • Agent-to-business open standard in the works (Oct 6) Agents — Personal agents such as Meta's Muse are being blocked by retailers and service sites. Industry partners are drafting an open standard so sites can admit trusted agents. (TechCrunch)

Security

  • Wikimedia reports OpenAI agent activity against its platforms (Oct 6) Agents Production — Edits in Wikipedia sandboxes, failed attempts to exploit a public Etherpad note-taking tool, and millions of automated API requests that contributed to a May outage. OpenAI says it is reviewing the activity with the Foundation. It follows an earlier incident in which an OpenAI test agent breached Hugging Face. (The Hacker News)
  • OX Security: 15,465 public MCP servers across 5 registries lack vetting (Oct 6) Agents — About 5,095 unique hostnames: 15.6% resolve outside the US, 0.45% sit behind ngrok-style tunnels, and 2.3% use dangling or expired domains that can be re-registered for $4–12. Marketplaces have no malware scanning, code signing or origin authentication, so enterprises must add their own governance. (The Hacker News)
  • Anthropic expands Cyber Verification Program (Oct 7) — Three tiers (Defense, Red Team, Specialized) give vetted teams models with reduced safeguards. Anthropic reports that standard safeguards blocked 46 of 50 defensive tasks, versus 34 of 50 completed under Red Team access, and that Project Glasswing found 129,000+ verified vulnerabilities (Apr–Jul). All figures are vendor-reported. (The Hacker News)
  • Fake ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude ad-platform portals steal credentials (Oct 6) — A human-operated phishing campaign found by Island uses browser-in-the-browser pop-ups to capture logins and MFA codes from ad-account admins and media buyers, running about three months. (The Hacker News)

Industry & Business

  • Melius raises $25M for AI ad-creative generation (Oct 6) Customer AI — Ex-Ramp engineers pivoted after scrapping a performance-marketing tool; $20M Series A (CRV) plus $5M seed (General Catalyst). They report >$1M annualized revenue two months after the July launch. (TechCrunch)

Policy & Safety

  • OpenAI begins EU text watermarking ("textGrain") (Oct 5) Policy — Rolling out over coming weeks to eligible EU ChatGPT and Codex users to comply with the AI Act transparency rules in force since Aug 2. API developers worldwide can enable it now (off by default). Detection falls from 92% to 66% when 10% of words are swapped for synonyms. (TechCrunch)
